Whilst the ‘urgent’ category is reserved solely for suspected bone cancer, Dr. Allcock - LHN’s Head of Unit for Orthopedics – has suggested two criteria GPs can include in their referral letters to assist Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH) Orthopaedics to judge the true level such as the patient’s symptoms & assess if a patient should be promoted from ‘non-urgent’ to ‘semi-urgent’ waiting list.
1. Use Objective Statements
Objective statements such as “has become confined to the house”, “has had to take to a wheelchair” or “is woken every night by pain” provide more information than subjective statements of “severe pain” or “very severe pain”
2. Consider & Include BMI Calculations
Patients who are unlikely to proceed to surgery - being those with a BMI >40 - are not prioritised. Weight loss, even over their waiting period, should be discussed & supported
The SA Health Clinical Practice Guidelines assist health care providers in the appropriate management of their patients.
SA Health has made these guidelines accessible via a website based resource - which can be viewed by both clinicians and consumers - and includes clinical practice guidelines related to perinatal, neonatal medical administration & child health.
This updated resource replaces the previous Apple app Practices Guideline Reader & can be accessed via any ‘smart’ device regardless of the operating system.
For further information on accessing this resource or assistance deleting the outdated app contact (08) 8161 9459 (9.00am -5.00pm, Mon to Fri).

Medical practitioners play a key role in supporting patients to fulfill their vaccination requirements.
On August 16, changes were made to allow additional doctors to notify a medical exemption to vaccination to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR). In the event an individual cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, medical practitioners are now one of the specific groups of doctors able to notify the AIR that the individual has a medical exemption to vaccination.
You can view the official advice from the CMO regarding this update here.
The Centre for Obesity, Medicine, & Surgery (COMS) team, based at TQEH, has been experiencing an increase in referrals, causing extensive waiting times to enter the program.
GPs referring to the program are encouraged to communicate to patients the requirements for involvement.
Patients must engage in at least 12-months lifestyle modification, including a six-week group program, before suitability for surgery is assessed. Patients successfully completing the program could be waiting up to five years before receiving surgery.
To ensure patient eligibility, please see the factsheet which includes a link to the referral form.
